Spain’s folkloric Ballet Nacional de España (BNE) and contemporary Compañía Nacional de Danza were the focus of my six months in Spain on the Edward Gonzalez Art Grant. Sessons with principal BNE dancers Miguel Corbacio and Maribel Alonso on the rooftop of the Circulo des Bellas Artes in Madrid took shape between rainstorms and bursts of sunlight. Soloists Ana Lopez and Francisco Lorenzo from Compañía Nacional de Danza on tour in the Canary Islands, took positions amidst the rocky lava cliffs of Gran Canaria (Las Rocas). BNE company rehearsals under director Jose Antonio at Chopera Studios in Madrid gave me a glimpse of their process. The book “Danza” followed.
